Those of you who know me well know I love to chew gum.
One of my teachers in grade school once told me to spit out my gum. I quickly made up a lame excuse that I was chewing on my tongue. My teacher didn’t buy it and said, “Chewing gum is not that big of a deal, but you lied about it and that is a big deal! Kevin, your lack of honestly disappoints me.” I spit out my gum and felt ashamed for lying to my teacher. After class, I apologized to her and fortunately she was kind and praised me for apologizing. My teacher’s support and encouragement meant a lot to me, as I admired her a great deal.
Over the years I‘ve learned that being truthful and demonstrating excellent character shows respect for others. Henry Ford said, “My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me.” May we be our own best friend by bringing out the best in ourselves every day whether we are chewing gum or not.
