It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s work. His best-selling book: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People put him on the map. One of the 7 habits is “Seek first to understand before being understood.” I love that habit as so often we don’t get the facts before passing judgment.
President John F. Kennedy once said, “We often enjoy the luxury of opinion without the discomfort of thought.” It seems that many people complain about mundane issues. We all speak our minds on occasion without getting the facts of the issues. This is both wrong and dangerous. As doing so can ruin relationships and halt progress.
I hope we will all strive to be a little more patient and tolerant by getting the facts before making judgment. We indeed should all strive to seek to understand first before trying to be understood.
