Re-entering the workforce may seem like a daunting task, but don’t fear! I have 4 tips that will help you on your quest to regain employment that works for you. These tips come from an article, I recently found, in USA Weekend titled “4 tips for rejoining the workforce” by Allison O’Kelly of Momcorps.
Be prepared. This includes an updated résumé, a modern wardrobe and an explanation for why you have a gap in your work history. Make sure your explanation is positive, even if the situation is less than ideal, you can still accentuate the benefits of your employment gap. Some reasons might be school, family, lay-off from another company (be sure to accentuate how you benefited from this situation).
Redefine your success. “Just because you reached a certain level before doesn’t mean you have to return at the same level. A lower-level job can bring lower stress, which might be just what you need. Tell employers so they don’t consider you over qualified.”
Think Small. Smaller businesses will have more flexible work options. “Many smaller companies that are trying to save money are excited about bringing in someone part-time who is experienced.”
Tell your friends. When you are ready to get back to work, let people know! “You never know if the mom next to you on the soccer field had a friend who has a job that’s just right for you.” Networking is essential to getting your foot in the door these days!
Remember as Henry Hartman said, “Success always comes when preparation meets opportunity.” Follow this advice and you will be on your way to success. For more great career advice, check out The Job Stop, our Career Services blog listed on my Blogroll to the right.
